History of Eid-ul-Adha
Eid-ul-Adha commemorates the devotion of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was prepared to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) at God’s command. As he raised the knife, God replaced Ismail with a ram — and the act of sacrifice (qurbani) has been performed by Muslims ever since. The festival falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, coinciding with the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
In Bangladesh, known widely as Kurbani Eid, it is the second-largest religious festival of the year. In the weeks before Eid, cattle markets (haats) spring up across the country, and the trade in sacrificial animals forms a significant seasonal economy. The meat of the sacrifice is traditionally divided into three parts — for the family, for relatives and friends, and for the poor.
How Eid-ul-Adha Is Celebrated
- Eid prayers in congregation, followed by the sacrifice of cattle, goats, or camels
- Dividing the qurbani meat into three shares: family, relatives, and the poor
- Bustling cattle haats in the days before Eid — a festival economy of its own
- Festive beef and mutton dishes, from rezala to kala bhuna
- Homecoming journeys as city dwellers return to their villages for the holidays
