CurrentThe Bengali calendar, known as Bangla Panjika, is a solar calendar used in Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam. The calendar was reformed in 1987 by the Bangla Academy to standardize month lengths and align it with the Gregorian calendar more precisely.
The Bengali year consists of 12 months grouped into 6 seasons (Ritu), each spanning two months: Grishmo (Summer), Borsha (Monsoon), Shorot (Autumn), Hemonto (Late Autumn), Sheet (Winter), and Boshonto (Spring). The first five months have 31 days each, and the remaining seven months have 30 days each (with Chaitra having 31 days in a leap year).
The Bengali New Year, known as Pohela Boishakh, is celebrated on April 14th every year. The Bengali year can be calculated by subtracting 593 from the Gregorian year (for dates after April 14). The calendar holds deep cultural significance and is integral to the festivals, agriculture, and daily life of the Bengali people.
